Build the route around nights, not a checklist
A useful Albania road trip is usually easier to plan as a sequence of overnight bases. That gives you time for parking, meals, beaches or old towns without turning every day into a transfer.
Short trip: keep one region
With only a few rental days, combine Tirana with one cultural or coastal base instead of trying to reach the north and far south in the same trip.
One week: mix city and coast
A longer trip can combine Tirana, Berat and a southern-coast base, with day trips chosen after you see traffic, weather and energy levels.
Longer trip: add the north
If you have more time, Shkoder can become a separate northern base before you continue toward central or southern Albania.
Three road-trip shapes to consider
Culture + coast
Tirana → Berat → southern coast → Tirana. Good for travelers who want a capital-city start, historic architecture and several days near the sea.
North + central Albania
Tirana → Shkoder → central Albania → Tirana. Useful when you prefer city, lake and cultural stops over a long south-coast transfer.
Coastal-focused trip
Tirana or Durres → coastal bases → Saranda area. Keep enough nights in each base so you are not checking in and out every day.
These are planning frameworks, not fixed itineraries. Driving time changes with traffic, stops and road conditions.
